Gravitational Phase Transition in Neutron Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
The possibility of a gravitational phase transition, especially with respect to neutron stars is investigated. First, a semiclassical treatment is given, predicting a gravitational London penetration depth of 12km for neutron stars. Second, the problem is considered from a GinzburgLandau point of view. A gravitational Meissner effect, a gravitational Aharanov-Bohm type effect and a gravitational ferromagnetic type phase are predicted. Finally, a field theoretic consideration predicts a mass term for the graviton below a certain critical temperature. PACS number(s): 04.60, 04.70, 11.15.E, 97.60.J

Gravitational Waves from Phase Transitions of Accreting Neutron Stars
We propose that when neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries accrete sufficient mass and become millisecond pulsars, the interiors of these stars may undergo phase transitions, which excite stellar radial oscillations. We show that the radial oscillations will be mainly damped by gravitational-wave radiation instead of internal viscosity. The gravitational waves can be detected by the advanced...
متن کاملCosmological Gravitational Wave Background from Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars
It has recently been suggested that collapse of neutron stars induced by a phase transition to quark matter can be a considerable source of gravitational waves with kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that if about one percent of all neutron stars undergo this process, the resulting cosmological gravitational wave background would reach about 10 times the critical density. The background would peak...
متن کاملGravitational wave background from neutron star phase transition
We study the generation of a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background produced by a population of neutron stars (NSs) which go over a hadronquark phase transition in its inner shells. We obtain, for example, that the NS phase transition, in cold dark matter scenarios, could generate a stochastic GW background with a maximum amplitude of hBG ∼ 10, in the frequency band νobs ≃ 20−2000 Hz for...

After a brief discussion of a possible relationship between the electroweak phase transition in highly compressed matter and gravitational collapse, we examine the speculative possibility that the electroweak phase transition might be contemporarily occurring in processes in neutron stars. We conjecture that adiabatic compression of neutron star matter due to focusing of the energy from a super...
متن کاملGravitational Waves from Phase-transition Induced Collapse of Neutron Stars
We study the gravitational radiation from gravitational collapses of rapidly rotating neutron stars induced by a phase-transition from normal nuclear matter to a mixed phase of quark and nuclear matter in the core of the stars. The study is based on self-consistent three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations with Newtonian gravity and a high resolution shock capturing scheme, and the quadrupole ...
